NHS delivers record-breaking summer performance: what this means for hospital locum doctors

The NHS has achieved remarkable milestones this summer, delivering record sales of elective cancer care despite significant challenges. According to data published by NHS England on 9 October 2025, these achievements highlight the resilience and dedication of healthcare professionals across the country - including the vital role of locum doctors in maintaining service delivery.

Record-breaking numbers tell a story of dedication

Between June and August 2025, NHS staff managed an impressive 4.60 million elective cases - 138,000 more than the previous year. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given the context: five days of resident doctor strikes and the traditional summer leave period when many permanent staff take well-deserved breaks.

The data reveals that locum doctors and healthcare professionals delivered nearly 7.5 millions tests and checks, over a quarter of a million more than summer 2024. Additionally, a record 654,640 patients received cancer diagnoses or had the disease ruled out within the target 28 days - 25,560 more patients than the previous year.

What this means for hospital locum doctors

These achievements underscore the critical importance of flexible workforce solutions in maintaining NHS services. For locum doctors, this represents both recognition of their essential contribution and insight into where opportunities may arise:

Elective care expansion: with the NHS just one day's worth of activity behind delivering on elective care targets, there's clear momentum in surgical specialties. Locum opportunities in anaesthetics, general surgery, and specialist surgical disciplines are likely to remain robust as trusts work to maintain this positive trajectory.

Cancer services growth: The record numbers in cancer diagnosis and treatment pathways indicate sustained demand for oncology, radiology, and pathology locum roles. Histopathologists and radiologists, in particular, may find increased opportunities as services expand to meet growing demand.

Seasonal workforce planning: The summer's success, achieved during peak leave periods, demonstrates how effective locum coverage enables trusts to maintain services year-round. This bodes well for consistent locum opportunities, particularly during traditional holiday periods.

Preparing for continued success

As we move into autumn and winter, the lessons from this record-breaking summer become even more relevant. The NHS is already seeing increased demand in urgent and emergency care, with September 2025 being the busiest on record for A&E and ambulance services.  For locum doctors considering their next roles, this data suggests several key areas of opportunity:

  • Emergency medicine: with 2.31 million A&E attendences in September (a 4% rise), emergency medicine locum positions remain in high demand
  • Acute medicine: the continued pressure on urgent care pathways creates ongoing opportunities for acute medicine specialists
  • Respiratory medicine: with winter approaching and respiratory illness patterns emerging, respiratory medicine locum roles are likely to increase

At Holt Doctors, we're seeing this demand translate into excellent opportunities for our registered locum doctors. Our partnerships with major NHS Trusts mean we can offer positions that align with these service departments, from emergency medicine jobs to anaesthetics positions, supporting the expanding elective programme.
