Over a the bank holiday weekend at the end of May during Mental Health Awareness Week, Holt Doctors took on the challenge of running, walking and cycling the equivalent distance from Lands End to John O'Groats - that's 874 miles!
We did this during Mental Health Awareness Week partly to promote the positive impact that exercise can have on mental health, along with other benefits of a healthy lifestyle. The other main reason that we took on this challenge was to raise money for NHS Charities Together and all the great work they do supporting charities across the country.
The challenge got off to a steady start on the Friday, with the majority of people working that day, we were only at 75 miles, with another almost 800 miles to go over the next three days.
But, as the weekend progressed, the distance travelled each day just kept going up and up! By the end of day 2, we’d done another 125 miles, which took us up to the equivalent of near Bristol. Whilst this was great progress, there was still a large distance to go…
By the end of Sunday, we’d travelled 200 miles up the west of England from Bristol, and with a quick virtual overnight stop-over, we were back up on the Bank Holiday Monday raring to go.
Some big shifts were put in with some 50+ mile bike rides, as of around 8pm on Monday night, a few hours before the end of the day and the end of the challenge, we were on 685 miles out of the 874 mile total we needed to reach.
When Tuesday came around and the final total distance was counted up, with the additions of people who submitted their miles once we were back in work on Tuesday, we had absolutely SMASHED the target with a total distance of 1024 miles!
It was a fantastic effort from everyone in the team and all the effort that was put in, and there was a very positive feeling about the time we’d spent outdoors and exercising which may not have otherwise been done.
It was also a great effort from everyone who donated, as we managed to raise £400 for NHS Charities Together which will go towards supporting their very worthwhile work they do. If you’d like to learn more about the work they do, or want to donate directly, please visit their site here.
